I have a 1997 mercruiser 454 engine. Had all of my belts replaced recently. ever since when im idle or turn my steering wheel all the way one way or another I sometimes hear a pinging sound like a metal guard rattle coming from the engine compartment. Its not a clicking but a higher ping rather than a click. I have tried to hunt it down but dont know where to begin. Anyone have any suggestions out there??

Re: Slight pinging noise from engime

retard your timing a couple of degrees. The new belt is not slipping like the old one did and its putting a load on the engine. That noise you hear is the pistons rattling in the cylinders. The fuel mixture is being ignited to soon. The pistons are still to low in the cylinders when the spark occures. Or you can reset timing to book specs first. and see what you get. If you allow this to continue it can damage your engine

Re: Slight pinging noise from engime

Engines rarely ping at idle speed. They do ping if they are under load, overheated or running at higher RPM...if you do suspect pinging, the addition of high test gasoline should cause it to decrease or stop altogether...I would be looking for other things which may be causing the noise.

I didn't get from the OP that he is describing the typical "ping/pre-ignition" but rather using ping to describe the sound he is hearing. If this is a new sound after the service I would look at belt tension.
