you can have new one welded on

you can have new one welded on or you could try a replacement bolt on like the skeggard brand. do you trailer or keep your boat in the water?

"my boat is trailered.....DOes it cost alot to get one welded on.....

If I ride the boat without one, what will happen?"

I think my skeg repair was som

I think my skeg repair was something like $60 and only lasted 1 season. The Skeggard was around $110 and lasted for 15 years. You can ride without one but you are putting your prop at risk if it is not full length.

The reason I asked about trailered vs moored is because the stainless steel skeggard can contribute to galvanic corrosion if your boat is kept in the water all the time

I whacked a rock with my old 115hp outboard a few years ago, and bust quite a chunk of the skeg off. Probably 2/3 of it was missing. The boat still seemed to perform properly, ie. steering, plaining, whatever. But I wanted it fixed just because... I had a neighbor up the street that had a similar outboard and I traced his skeg on to a piece of cardboard. I took the whole boat on trailer, and the cardboard down to a local metal fabricating shop, and the guy tig welded a piece of aluminum back on for me. Welding, grinding, welding, grinding until the thing looked perfect. I waited there while he did it, and it only took about 20 mins. They charged me $40. I replaced the propshaft seals myself just incase they got too hot during welding. I left the oil in during welding to try and disperse the heat.

It worked for me.

"Good comments. Can't cost too much to weld. It's just an exercise in grinding and tig welding, then grinding again.

Reminds me of one time about 15 years ago in texas when i had my boat trailered and i was pulling it up the ramp. Two people were pointing and hollering as i drove up the ramp. I was thinking, "they like my new Glastron. It is kinda nice". But then i noticed my drive was down and my (former) skeg had cut a nice groove from the ramp down the parking lot. Ground down my pride as well as my skeg on that hot texas day."
