Side discharge manifolds vs top discharge

"When i did my repower in 07 with just the long block, We used the same type of manifolds and elbows that were on the old engine ( side discharge manifolds). Whenever i decide to replace manifolds and risers again, should i switch to top center discharge and the matching elbows and risers, or does it not really matter? What is the advantage of the newer style?"
