"I received my brand new rebuilt Chrysler 440's back from the rebuilder a couple of months ago. Cranked them up and had various problems most notably both impellers shredded (d55 pumps)on the s/b side and the impeller for the the coolers on the port side also shredded. The raw water pumps had the impellers replaced (all four impellers) at the time of the engine rebuilds. The impeller failures where suprising to me since the builder did in fact run the motors in their shop prior to me getting them back. Frankly I wasn't expecting the problem that I have had subsequently. As you can imagine we went back and forth on who did what. My theory is he ran his tanks dry during runup, he claims I left the thru hulls closed (not). Anyways, I am left with the cleanup. I have replaced the impellers and am in the process of removing the broken vanes that ended up in the coolers. My question is what happened to the impeller pieces that disintigrated from the impeller that connects to the engine housing? There does not seem to be a trap on the housing to catch the vanes and prevent them from entering the block. Are the passages in the block large enough to circulate any pieces, and then out through the thermostat housing? (engine is raw water cooled)"
