"I have an 2003 Alumacraft Tournament 175 (17’11”) with a 2000 Yamaha 100 4 stroke with a SS prop. The boat tops out at around 35 to 38 mph and running at about 5000 rpm. The boat seams to plane out OK, not like a ski boat though.

My question is, should I be able to troll that engine so I can get it down to about 1 to 1.5 mph. Currently I troll at around 2 to 2.5 mph. I have not noticed what rpm’s that it is running. What is the lowest SAFE rpm that this engine should idle?

Thanks in advance for the information.

"Are you talking about adjusti

"Are you talking about adjusting the idle to get it down where you want it? The "safe" lowest rpm is whatever the manual calls for at idle. On a number of the newer injected models you can't even adjust the idle, the computer takes care of that.

If when you take it all the way down to idle and you are still going too fast you have a couple of options. 1) install a trolling plate 2) get a couple of drift socks to use as anchors to slow it down 3) get a kicker motor.

I wouldn't take the motor down below spec (which is probably in the 700-900 rpms range)."
