should I delete or not delete oil injection

Hello, i recently bought a 1 owner bass boat (barn find). Its a 1990 RANGER 354V WITH A MERCURY 150 XR4 BLACK MAX. Everything on the boat works everything is untouched. my concern is that the boat is 35 years old and i would love to keep it as original as possible, the oil injection works but should i keep it and just hope it doesn't fail. or just rid of the system and mix oil into the tanks at the gas pump?
 
I'd ping Faztbullet who is a certified mechanic and Marine repair (maybe sales too) business owner. He has been exposed to the pros and cons and the results over the years and his opinion should certainly be trusted. I had a 2002 90 2 stroke whereby I disabled it in 2012 and later purchased a 2002 115 2 stroke whereby I didn't. So I can't comment as I was straddling the fence not knowing which side to jump off.
 
The oil pump might be driven by a PLASTIC gear on the crankshaft.-----Plastic is not a permanent material.-----Now some V-6 models used a sensor to warn if pump stopped rotating.----See if yours has that.----Test the warning horn.----For me the choice is easy to make.

Years ago I read that it is made out of Phenolic Material....... AI response to an online inquiry just now:

It is known for its strength, durability, and excellent electrical insulation properties, making it suitable for various industrial applications."

In industry we used the material for some things. It may be classified a plastic, but not your concept of plastic parts. So, Merc. engineers must have figured it was the right product for the oil pump drive function considering the requirements for a drive gear. I have limited exposure but know of no one who lost an oil pump drive gear!
