Should I buy it?

I am thinking about buying a 1999 175hp Johnson. I have read some pretty bad reviews on the motors that vintage. The people have not run it in a couple years but the price seems right. If it passes the compression test and spark and shift test, should I buy it? What else might I be looking at as far as this motor goes. I know a test drive is out of the question.

Look up on this website for cost / availability of spare parts.------Call local dealers / shops to see if the will work on it.--------I see some of those motors laying outside in the rain , discarded as scrap.

I think you are hearing about the 1999 Evinrude Ficht 60* engines. The Johnson will be carbed , not injected, and not subject to the problems of the Ficht.
