Should all motors pee

"This may seem like a stupid question, but should all boat motors pee? and do they pee right away when started? I had a boat mechanic tell me that they will start to pee only after they warm up sufficiently. When I hook up muffs to my 120 HP merc force water does come out of the propeller, but not out of the 2 holes higher on the lower unit. Is this normal? I don't want to run it too long and ruin the motor. Thanks"

"Marc, not all motors pee.

There are a few different designs incorporated into "most" motors to give you a visual confirmation that cooling water is flowing.

Some have a tube connected to the motor head that will "pee" out a stream from the back of the lower cowl to show you they are working.

Others have a couple "relief holes" from which water will "spit" or "weep". In this style, the motor relies on the exhaust to push the water out of these holes. After the water has circulated around the cylinders it goes down the exhaust housing, some along the back of the housing and is (blown) out the holes by the exhaust.

The more exhaust (pressure) the more it weeps or spits. So at idle it will spit less than if it's running at a higher rpm.

Yet others have no visual way to determine if water is flowing.

For those with tubes, depending on where it is fed from they will either start flowing immediately or when the motor warms enough to open the thermostat.

Your model has "relief holes" and you should at least see some "weeping" from them when running on a flusher at idle but I wouldn't worry if they aren't "spitting" like they would when the boat is underway..."

"Marc it is not a hard job to fit a tell tail like the later model engines have we have done lots of these mods and it is worth while, it could save your engine one day"

I drill and tap the top of the block for a Tell Tale if there isn't one there already. That removes an air lock and improves cooling.

Put a T inline and hook up a water pressure guage for even more protection from overheating. I have one mounted on the centre of my dash it has saved me more than once from possible engine damage. Picking up discarded plastic bags on the leg while running on plane is a fairly common problem.

thanks for the input. Jamie where would I find instructions on how to fit a tell tail on my motor?
