Shot distributor gear

"Well I got stranded last week

"Well I got stranded last weekend with less than two hours on a fresh rebuild on my OMC 2.5. No spark was the culprit and I discovered that the distributor gear was to blame. Is it possible to replace just the gear? (I see the pin to remove it so I'm assuming I can) Anyone know of somewhere to get it? I have found gears, but they have the wrong rotation which leads me to believe that I have a right hand motor. Where can I find one?"

"Went and got a new distributo

"Went and got a new distributor gear today, installed and it fired right up. Ran for about thirty seconds and has absolutely no oil pressure. Immediately shut it down and removed the distributor again to see that the cam gear was wearing on the distributor gear again.... Any thoughts?"

"fresh rebuild you say? And di

"fresh rebuild you say? And did you prime the oil pump?

And what sorta rebuild are we talking about, and who did it?"

"The oil pump was primed, I&#3

"The oil pump was primed, I'm sure of it. I had the motor on the water for 2 hours and it just died. Still runs like a sewing machine, only issue is the chewing of the distributor gear. I also had a goober moment when putting in the new distributor gear and didnt ground the oil pressure sending unit. I tinkered with it a little more after my last post and the pressure reads 80lbs+ (gauge doesnt read any higher) but the gear did show a little more wear. I noticed that I can hear the cam and the distributor gear through the block (anyone else able to on a 3.0?) So with the oil pressure scenario just being my mistake what else can it be?

The rebuild was done by Mundy's Precision Machine and they are well seasoned in marine applications...

Thanks guy's for your patience and information, I'm obviously not a mechanic and your knowledge is greatly appreciated."

"ok so DID THEY PUT IN A HIGH

"ok so DID THEY PUT IN A HIGH VOLUME OIL PUMP, AND IF THEY DID, DID THEY CHANGE OUT THE HIGH PRESSURE SPRING? it needs the low pressure spring.

The high reading on the gauge confirms that.

See if they did not change out the spring then you are putting undo stress on the oil pump gear and will continue to strip them out, and the cam gear how's that look, see that will go also.

and one other thing about a hv pump they needed to install a larger oil pan cause the pump will suck it dry and your motor will not get enough oil.

Oh bye the way i am a mechanic have been for over40 years."

"I believe they did put in a h

"I believe they did put in a high volume pump. The pan looks new, and it took a little over 6 quarts of oil to fill today when I did the Oil change. I am uncertain about the spring though. If I confirm the spring hasnt been changed where can I get a low pressure unit from? I have enough room in the engine bay that I'm almost certain that I can change the pump once the pan is removed.
As far as the cam gear goes, I shined a flashlight down the distributor shaft hole, and it looks brand new (cant even see the contact points)

BTW the work done was a full blown rebuild. All new seals, crank, rod's, piston's, cam, oil pump and loads of other stuff. Also had them look at the upper and lower gear casings on the lower unit and everything checked out. (I replaced all the o-rings and seals and confirmed this)

Thanks in advance Cheif"

Thanks for the help Chief. I&#

Thanks for the help Chief. I'm under the impression that I'm going to have to pull it regaurdless of the culprit. I figure the shaving's from the distributor gear are probably circulating through the entire motor (dont want to have to rebuild entirely just to solve this issue)After reading that thread about HVP's and marine engine's I think I'll just order the standard volume pump clean the pan of all debris and inspect the cam gear. May order a new distributor as well (just for piece of mind) I have a decent amount of shaft play in the distributor housing (about 1/4" vertical) does anyone know if this is correct?

"Probably, I'm looking at

"Probably, I'm looking at oil pump, entire distributor, and a cam gear replacement. Hopefully this will solve the issue.

When I say play in the shaft I mean that the shaft slides 1/4" in the distributor housing."

zero play is acceptable. the d

zero play is acceptable. the dizzy is so critical to the running of the motor i can't even explain how mush.

"I was toolin around today and

"I was toolin around today and pulled the distributor, removed the oil pump/distributor gear and replaced distributor to see how hard the oil pump was to turn by hand. How much resistance should I be experiencing? The reason I ask it turns freely for about 1/8 turn and then becomes increasingly harder until I can no longer turn it. I know that I am building oil pressure when I turn it but I was told that it should spin rather freely by a friend of mine (just a shade tree mechanic). Thanks again guy's!

P.s. I already ordered the new distributor but I'm hoping that I wont have to pull the cam if the oil pump is indeed the issue."
