I received quite a shock when I tried to adjust a spark plug wire holder while running my outboard. Is this a bad ground ?

Only if you're a "Bad Guy"! Unfortunately, you were the only thing grounded. :rolleyes:

There's roughly 50,000 volts at that wire/boot when running.... Don't Do That!

and check your plug wire boots for holes from someone poking them with a test light.....

I'm sure by now.you've realized how little I know about any of this stuff. I retired 2yrs ago and brought a used pontoon with a 90 johnson. Since then I've acquired 2 more boats with Johnson's.I appreciate everything all of you have taken the time to share with me.Nobody will have to tell me twice not to touch a boot on a running motor. There are holes in the boots. Thanks again.

Then you have to replace the plug wires.
