shifting...

guys my motor(1991 200 hp Johnson) is not shutting down half of the engine when you shifting in to forward or reverse, the switch is good, I can press it and shuts off half of the motor, how do I adjust the switch???

What makes you think the switch isn't functioning properly. The purpose of the switch is to allow you to shift from either gear back into neutral... and it happens so fast that it cannot be detected by ear of feel.

I retired from the marine line in 1991 and to my knowledge, there was no adjustment at that time.

Hi Nick....

As Joe says, there is no adjustment. But to test, you actually have to hold the prop to provide some pressure or resistance just like the water would do.
Then, as you operate the shift linklage, you will see the switch "ride up" or slide in that mounting bracket and make electrical connection for a split second as it goes from reverse to neutral.

OF COURSE.....NOT RUNNING WHEN TESTING LIKE THIS.

@ Joes, so it does not shuts off half of the motor from neutral to forward or neutral to reverse??? only from gear to neutral???

@ daselbee, so I need two people for the test, one to hold the prop and observe the switch and the other to operate the control??? motor is off and not running

Yes on both.

When I saw it done, demonstrated, the mechanic reached down with left hand, with gearcase in reverse, and held the prop from turning....put pressure on it. He then operated the shift linkage (cable was disconnected from the motor) (cowlings were off) with his right hand. The switch visibly moved up in it's bracket as the shift linkage went from reverse to neutral. That would have killed the right bank momentarily, had the motor been running, and in reverse gear, which is it's function. EDIT: the idea is to put turning force on the prop to "jam" or hold tight the clutch dog teeth as they engage the reverse gear cogs. The propshaft will be going counterclockwise, so put turning force on the prop in a clockwise direction to jam the dog and gear together as if it were running in reverse. (I think....it is late.....)
