Shifting to Neutral for starting

I purchased a 1986 Bayliner Capri with a Volvo Penta 2.3L outboard. When starting it I can't seem to get it into the position where I can warm up the engine when starting. Some said to pull the shifter out then it will allow to throttle is up without being in gear. I can't seem to get it to do that. Does anyone have about that year and modle Volvo outdrive that can give me real instructions?

Can you post a photo of the shifter?

Here are a couple of pictures.

Thanks, That worked but I had to pry on it a little. Is there something I could spray on it to free it up a little? I have a little plastic tool that I will keep in the glove box now that I know exactly what it is supposed to do. Thanks again!

I will try some CRC. The part of the boat it is mounted on isn't that solid so I had to pry a little get get it out. Knowing from your help, it only had to move 1/4" helped. Mine does not have a button to push just the lock out so it doesn't go into gear. Thanks again.

I lubed mine with Quicksilver 2-4-C but that was because I needed to disassemble for replacing the shift cable. Mine is an '84 4 Winns, so it was overdue for clean & lube.

It's a cheap Morse (Maybe Teleflex?? but I think Morse) control. Best to grip it with several fingers along the square sides & pull straight out. While holding it out begin to rotate it. It will stay out until returned to neutral locking position.
I'm sure some lube sprayed on will help but be sure to wipe extra off the interior vinyl right away. A better long term solution it to completely disassemble, clean & grease the whole thing.

Oh, BTW an '86 Bayliner may have a Volvo or an OMC Cobra stern drive.
Volvo used Volvo 4 cylinder engines (IDK if 2.3L or not), OMC used 3.0L GM and 2.3L Ford based engines.
In 1994 OMC & Volvo created a "Joint Venture" agreement and Volvos began looking like OMC Cobras.
I'm going into this because I believe you are possibly incorrectly identifying your drive as Volvo. Doing so will cause yourself all sorts of future parts & service problems.
Post a picture of the engine & the drive.
This issue is totally separate from your control question above.
