" Joe/others,

I have a 1995 Evinrude 30 HP. My problem is as follows: The motor goes into and out of gear easily, but sometimes, when shifting into neutral, the motor remains in gear! It does it in either direction, forward or reverse. I have to lift up on the lockout handle and move it slightly to disengage the prop and get back to neutral! I have tried adjusting the cable, but it did not help. I was watching the shifter arm attached to the motor housing, and it seems like it has to move quite a bit before the gears engage. Your thoughts on how to repair this annoying problem is greatly appreciated! Other than this minor problem (which I hope will not turn into a major problem) the motor runs great!

"Mark.... It does sound like there might be some play somewhere that is causing that problem. However, without actually being there, it would be impossible for me to pinpoint exactly where that problem might be.

Remove the shift cable from the engine, then manually move the shift linkage at the engine to see if all is well in that area... a starting point. To have the play adjusted properly, do the following.

When all is as it should be, the proper method to adjust the shift cable is to disconnect the cable from the engine. Move the shift linkage on the engine to find the center of the play in neutral, and when found, leave it centered.

Now, grab the end of the shift cable sleeve, push and pull it to find the center of the play there, and center that play.

Adjust the trunion on the threaded portion of the shift cable so that the centered play of the cable lines up with the centered play of the engine's shift linkage. Lock and install the shift cable with the retaining clamp in that position. Let us know what you find.
