Shifting Problems 1988 350

I have a 1988 Four Winns 21.5 Sundowner with a 350 chevy cobra engine. My question is when shifting runs perfectly in neutral, when shifting to forward or reverse stalls engine. Could it be ESA module, interrupter switch or both. Thanks for your help

I think your lower cable needs adjustment

Easy to rule out the ESA, just unplug it and see if that helps, if it does then we can try and figure out why it is causing the stall. Normally the ESA does not engage going into gear but if the shift cable adjustment mentioned by the Chief is out then it could be hanging up.
