shifts fine into reverse won&#

shifts fine into reverse won't shift in to forward. neeed some suggestions on which direction to head wiht this problem.

"did you have the lower unit off lately, if so it is probably the cam/spline out of rig. if not remove the linkage from engine and try to shift it by hand"

"I have an 80hp 1980 model merc and when I purchased it, found that the sliding bracket with the pin in it that holds the gear slider (in the motor) had snapped and no longer had the pin. This also only enabled me to shift into reverse. May be worth checking."
