Shifting issue J150VXSIG 2001 Johnson 150

Pulled the foot off to do some lower unit work. Basically cleaned up the lower gearcase and replaced the water pump. Didn't touch the shift rod n
But measured it and looked to be in spec. After reassembly, something isn't kosher. We shift like butter in either direction but when going back to neutral, the neutral position is around 1/2 inch difference between forward to neutral, and reverse to neutral. Anybody got in experience with this issue?
 
The shift rod MUST be set to as specific dimension in neutral.----A wise owner would check that to be sure it is correct.-----Then adjust cable trunnion to suit.
