I have a 1987 Mercury 135hp ob

I have a 1987 Mercury 135hp ob. It's making a clunking noise when putting it into forward gear. The gears grind when slowly putting it in forward but are fine in reverse. At higher rpms the noise is gone. Having the problem when trying to come into dock at low speeds. The lower unit was taken off and worked on over the winter. The place that worked on it said the shifter cable might need to be adjusted. Anyone know how to do this or other thoughts on what it might be? I would just bring it back to the place that worked on it over the winter but it's 120 miles away.

"Marty, Never shift gears slowly. Move the gearshift smoothly and quickly into gear.

To set/check the shift cable adjuster, remove teh cowling, and put the motor into neutral. Now remove teh shift barrel nut from it's clamp. Now wiggle the cable untill the engine is solidly at rest in neutral. The gearbox should click into neitral and not have any play.

Now adjust the barrel nut until it fits the clamp w/o moving the shif slide."
