Shifting Into Forward Gear

I recently replaced the gears in the gearbox for my 1962 28 HP. Evirnude. I brought it out on the water, and it ran fine until I throttled it up past the slow idle speed, and I lost forward. I could go into reverse, neutral, but could not go into forward. Unless I slammed the shifter forward, but then it would fall out of gear. I opened up the gearbox and nothing is damaged. What could the issue be? Thanks for the help!

Did you line up the notches on the upper and lower shift rods with the hole when you installed the 2 bolts in the brass connecter.---Yes or no ?----Did you verify shift adjustment up at the shift lever on the side of the motor ?

I believe I did, but I will double check this time. And it seems that the cable is probably tightened so that each time I shift by the wheel, it falls into the forward, nuetral, reverse gear without any give.
