shifter splines!

I'm new to this site and have a question about lining up the shifter splines while reinstalling the lower unit. Everything else went well but I just can't seem to got the splines lined up. Any secrets!

What HP / year is the motor ?-----------Often times the lower unit is removed with control in nuetral.------During the work on the pump the unit may jump into forward.-------On re-install it just does not work.----Make sure control and lower unit are both in the same gear.

Fun isn't it? You can try turning the shift shaft slightly to get the splines to line up. Just make sure the lower unit & engine are in the same gear position.

Just for reference for the rest of us also, can someone please explain what direction to turn the shifter shaft on the lower unit to changes gears if it does inadvertently be changed from when it was removed from he leg?

Which direction does what gear?
And how far do you turn it?

Thanks!

Turning the shift shaft clockwise puts it into forward gear. Counter clockwise will bring it back to neutral, and reverse.

I'm at the stage of putting mine back together, it didn't want to go into reverse, but went into forwards. Any ideas? I'm going to adjust the cable on the top of the motor.

If it worked before you took it off then there should be no need for any adjusting.--------You have to take the lower unit off again and verify that lower unit and control box are in the same gear.---------Then put it back together.

What do you mean by control box? Do you mean the gear box? And what do you mean by single or double? I dont know what year it is but the serial number is A713707. Its an red band 115hp.
Thanks for replying.
