I have a 1988 25hp Evinrude. How do you disconnect the upper end of the shifter rod so I can change my water pump?

Remove the water intake screen from the lower unit to expose the shift rod connection.

Disconnect the shift rods... upper nut from lower nut.

Slide the upper nut upwards and carefully remove the tapered nylon nut retainer in order to remove the upper nut. Pay attention as to which way that taper faces.

The lower unit is now disconnected from the upper shift rod.
