I have some spare control boxes assembled & I don't plan on dissecting one to explore. I seem to remember the switch having a lever & roller follower that rides along the lever bottom.
I just looked in the parts diagram & it's as I remember. So that leads me to believe as you move the lever fwd or rev, it stops contacting the lever and it springs back to center position which is neutral. But why???
I'm also remembering a nylon bushing in the hub of the lever. Is your lever free of any play/wobble? I think if lever has play, perhaps it allows the switch roller to slide off it sideways?
Disassemble & check for any play/wobble. Maybe something is worn, bushing missing or simply not tightened properly.
