Shifter lock on Evinrude 35 1980

Hi
Im putting this motor E35ecsm1980 back together, Im up to the part of putting the last things on from what i took off. The shifter lock is still to go on. Whats the point of this lock? Ive run the motor and have selected gear and kept it in gear without it. The lever at the control box is quite stiff so i cant imagine that ever moving unaided. Do i need to re install it?
The less parts i need to take to sea the better. Thanks

For one thing it prevents the motor from reving too high in nuetral and in reverse.---You should put it back on.------------The safety switch also prevents cranking with the starter motor if it is in gear.

Thanks for that Racerone, i will do, im especially not keen at all on high rev start ups
