shifter linkeage

ive got this old merc, serial number 7044075 that i just bought, seems im having problems putting the lower end back in , the shifter seems to be missaligned , the shifter shaft goes into the spline ok, but there is a plastic rod connected to the tilt bracket thats giving me problems , not sure what exactly its for , looks like this plastic rod rotates or locks the shifter when the motor is tilted, ggggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrr, should not have bought this motor

the plastic rod has a round top, its about 4-5 inches long and sits in a grooved piece that the shifter rod goes into ,

do i really need this piece, ive looked all over for pictures of it , cant find a thing, getting frustrated

Having a small boat with a big, heavy motor on it (9 footer with 70 plus hp) I deliberately leave the reverse lock out so it won't capsize backing up. Judicious use of the throttle in reverse allows me to back up as needed without the motor flying up.
