Shifter has become very stiff

I am getting the boat ready fo

I am getting the boat ready for the season and my 1988 90HP Merc has become very hard to shift in and out of gear. The throttle/shifter controls are only 3 years old. I removed them from from the outboard and the shifter travels fine so I assume it is in the lower unit linkage. Now what? How can I free them up. It is difficult to shift out of nuetral into forward and reverse. I have worked it back and forth a number of times and it doesn't seem to get better. thanks Dennis g
 
Need to lube the cams that act

Need to lube the cams that actuate the neutral/ reverse lock (to keep the motor from tilting up).
