Shifter handle very stiff?

Seahorse Slave

New member
Hello everyone, new the forum and to my 64 cd21a seahorse 5 1/2. Here's the problem the shifter handle is extremely " stiff" as if it is binding up. I removed powerhead dropped lower unit thinking that my problem was below in clutch dawg? Is was not but needed to replace all the seals anyway so at this point I turned my attention to the shifter handle which after having removed shifter rod with L U remains very stiff? I can not figure out how the handle is removed? Any help would be very appreciated. Ps I have almost rebuilt this whole Johnny thanks to this forum and its members help. Very informative stuff here boys thanks!

You disconnect the bits on the inside of the exhaust housing and the shift handle pulls out.----Replace o-rings and clean up any corrosion in that hole.

Thanks for quick response racerone. Still a question though, I have removed the shift linkage from the shifter handle and don't see anything left to remove ie nut or bolt and still it will not come out? Have I missed something? I checked exploded view and also can't find the missing link to removing the handle.

There is an inner shift lever on the inner end of the shifter shaft. This is the lever that moves the shift rod up and down. There is a screw through it. Remove the screw and slide the lever off the shaft. Caution: Once the screw is out, the lever is fragile and will break if you put rotational force on it. Slide it straight off.

Ok fdr gator and racerone, I have disassembled the "bits" from the shifter handle to be honest I had already disassembled them before posting my original query. I still can not remove the handle so I'm attaching a pic that will hopefully help you gents point me in the right direction. If I can figure out how to post it anyways

Just took the handle off a 6 hp model today ( same thing ) and the job was simple , simple.----Not sure why you have an issue !

If you have the inner lever off, there is nothing holding the shifter in there except corrosion -- the same corrosion that is making it hard to shift. Rotate back and forth while pulling. But don't break it.

I have to agree with both of you. However I'm at work right now so I will have to try the rotate method when I get to the back to the house. It is pretty tightly bound up in there so I'm really concerned that I may break it. Penetrating oil? Tried some wd40 but still no luck. Also if I do break it how far up S... Creek will I be? I do plan on selling the motor when done with the resto so I would like to keep O.E. as possible.

How far up the creek, you ask? Well you can get a new one here at maringengine.com, part number 385837, for $162.99. That's how far.

Thanks everyone! update I have removed the handle! Victory!! I went at it with a this thing is gonna come out in two pieces or one but it's coming out tonight approach to it. Gently whacked it a few times with a hammer until at about half a rotation the corrosion gave way. I then rotated by hand and slid it out. Eureka. Before I joined this site I noticed a lot of folks didn't update the end result so I made a point too in case someone had the same problem. Racerone and fdr deserve all the credit. Thanks for the help and quick response guys.

Thanks for the update. You other guys out there--I don't suggest the hammer though. I get against the inner end of the shifter shaft with a pry bar and twisting to get it moving.
