Hello
I have a rip in the shifter bellows, can this be replaced with
out pulling the gimble ring? This is on a 1993 alpha 0ne mercruiser.
would like to do a quick fix to finish the summer.

Thanks

You have to pull the outdrive,
remove the plastic cable end where the short cable mounts to the shift bracket,
file down the bumps left by the small set screws on the cable end,
becareful not to kink the cable inner or outer core,

you have to pull the cable inner core out,
unscrew the brass fitting in the gimbal housing while spinning the outer core of the cable in the same direction so as not to twist it.
pull it out.

Remove old shift boot and install new one, reinstall outer cable, then inner cable

NOTE: the cable routing it is very important the way it is routed when it come into bildge area thru transom.............IT MUST BE THE SAME when reassembly!!!

So look close and remember.........

kghost, I've had my Bravo 3 apart too long over the winter and am not certain of the route my shift cable came from the gimbal housing to the top of the motor. Does Mercruiser have a recommended path?

Yes they do,

When it comes thru the transom it fits between the exhaust "rams horn" on the starter side of the motor and then up and around to the back of the motor to the shift bracket. It is very difficult to discribe.

the key is to route it so the cable can NOT rub on the coupler........

Thanks kghost! That is close to how I had it when I first reinstalled - but without the extra loop. The cable was too long that way so I re-routed between the exhaust ram and transom wall with a large sweeping loop around to the top.

Did you see my recent post about the speedo tube route? I need to find the best way to route it to keep it from getting damaged again. Thanks again!!
