Shifted in Reverse without running engine

I was out attaching my 1988 15

I was out attaching my 1988 15hp. This model has the gear shifter integrated into the twist grip throttle.

I shifted the motor into reverse without the engine running and then tried to shift it back to Neutral and it will not make that shift. Not knowing much about outboards I started seaching the web and I found a reprint of a Mercury manual the states (exact quote)"DO NOT attempt to shift motor into "Reverse" gear when engine is }not running or damage to the shift mechanism could result"

Is there anything I can try to save me a trip to the dealer. Any idea how expensive this little trip will cost me?

Thanks

No biggee. Just start it up and shift it back to neutral. You might even be able to do it by merely pulling the rope as someone else works the shifter.

"I tried the suggestion above and it didn't work. I had to pull all of the linkage apart and line everything up then re install it. From my experiance I could see how you could have issues with limited speed if the linkage was not set correctly. If your linkage is wrong you could have issues going full throttle in reverse. Forward and reverse has it own travel setting. Sorry but I don't know right length to set the linkage, I had to assume mine was right just out of alignment.

I was just thinking you could look at your throttle travel in forward and see if you get the same travel in reverse."
