Shift shaft spins freely 1983 90hp mercury 6 cy.

I removed the shift shaft when replacing the shift shaft seal. The seal was bad and water was in the foot. I also replaced the water pump. Now the shift shaft spins freely. How do I get the shaft to hook up.

Best way that I know is to take propshaft out.----That allows you to fit the shift shaft back into the shift cam.---Or keep trying and you may get lucky.
