Shift shaft in lower unit not engaging

"Hi everyone, I'm a first

"Hi everyone, I'm a first timer on this discussion board and I'm desperate for some help. I removed the lower unit off of my Mercury 200 20 HP to replace the impeller. In the process, the shift shaft was removed as well now the lower unit is stuck in forward and the shaft does not want to fall back into place in the lower unit. Can anyone tell me how I can fix this? Is there a gear that has moved or turned in the lower unit causing this problem? Any help would be much appreciated."

"remove lower, grab shift shaft with vise grips, turn ccw, spin prop to verify its in neutral. reassemble with control in neutral"
 
"remove the lower unit again,

"remove the lower unit again, on the front of the lower unit you should see a small shaft sticking up, if you grab that and turn it it will shift the lower unit.
That should fix it, unless some how you removed that shaft and the cam fell off??? Give us a year or serial number and we can have a better look."

"The shift shaft is the 3/8 diameter shaft in the front. Rotate it counterclockwise until the prop is in neutral, put the shifter (above) in neutral as well, and stab it back together. You might need someone to slowly pull the starter rope to get the drive shaft splines engaged.

"Not knowing what problems would be caused by doing so, I did remove the shaft from the lower unit assembly so likely your suspicion of the cam falling off is correct. s/n 7109534 but unsure of the model year."

That's a Canadian built late 70's (probably 1977 - Mississauga's records sucked) model 200.

If the cam came off the end it's time do dig back into the Seloc's manual (or buy one) and start reading over the process or replacing it...

"just wondered if anybody could help!! my engine is a mercury 9.9 hp 1987 model. it works fine going forward and in neutral, but when i put it in reverse it makes the right sound and everything but its not making the prop spin fast enough!!!

please please please can anybody help!!!!"
