I know this has been discussed before I'm sure, so please bear with me. My personal Sprint bass boat 1996 with 150 intruder optical ignition system evinrude. Had gotten to point where it wouldn't go in reverse , clutch dog slipping . adjusted cable over and over again , it would work for awhile at low rpms then start slipping again. So decided to rebuild lower unit and replace cables. Bought new pro marine high efficiency cables( orange cables) new gear set with clutch dog. Installed ( everything works fine on lower unit shop mount) now I don't have shift shaft height tool for correct height. I've always counted the amount of turns out of shift shaft , and reinstalled same amount of turns , and it's pretty close everytime , with a little adjustments. I no that's not the correct way. I called original buyer of boat, he told me he had a problem when boat was new and took back to dealer , they said not to increase rpms in reverse. Now detent spring and ball works good , the shift coller is good, no wear at pin for clutch dog or direction shaft in the end of prop. shaft. Is there a possibility that shift shaft height was wrong from factory or that when he had impeller change that shift shaft was turned? Any help would be appreciated thanks.
