i got a early model 20 merc 200. i had just purchased a used lower unit. the spline on shaft of lower unit does not line up to upper shaft. can i adjust this problem at the top of shaft by power head? and if so does that gear up there screw on or is pressed on.

"put lower unit into neutral,

"put lower unit into neutral, prop will turn freely in either direction, shift powerhead into neutral and try again"

i had tried that. the flat spot on spline on shift shaft on lower unit does not alian up with the shaft on motor. in neutral on lower unit it is off to the right. and on motor in neutral it is off to the left ?

"there were two different shif

"there were two different shifters on those. if you still have the old one, put them side by side, and you will find they work in opposite directions! one model shift lever moved back and forth. the other moved up and down. I don't think they are interchangeable. even if you could make it line up, it would shift backwards."

No ---- the early 20hp shifted

No ---- the early 20hp shifted to forward by lifting the lever up ( same as to the back ) and the newer motors shifted to forward by moving the lever forward. There was no up / down shift motion till the later 18 / 25 hp motors and the lower unit would not fit on the earlier " slanted " motors anyway. Visit a dealer and see if they can show you how to make it work!

up/down lever motion. the shif

up/down lever motion. the shift shaft rotates. you could grind off a spline to make another flat. but it will shift backward. wich type shifter do you have?

from what i can tell i have a gear on top of shaft and another one one the shifter handle which turns the shift shaft to the left or right. i was wondering if i could remove the gear on the shaft and turn it to line every thing up?
