When reinstalling the lower u

When reinstalling the lower unit on my 1989 Evinrude 150 the shift rod will rotate and creates a real problem when trying to align the rod with the link thus making it impossable to install the bolt.Please help I have another water pump to change

On yours I find removing the shift cable,operating the shift lever manually, using an extra long pair of needle nose pliers to rotate the shift shaft to line it up with the anchor block and a little luck. You cannot rotate the shift rod at random.There is a measurement from the pin hole to the lower unit that must be correct.

extra long add 5"
Measure,in neutral,from the eye in the shift rod to the top of the gear housing, with the offset of the shiftshaft facing forward. "
