shift rod selector movement while lower unit is off ?

Hey guys, just wanted to double check from a previous email inquiry. I have my lower unit off my BF100 10HP motor, 1978 year of manufacture. I believe when before I disconnected the lower unit, I was able to grab the sift rod and move it up and down easily through the gears. I just watch a demo where the mechanic on youtube and he was moving through forward , neutral and reverse to show how lower unit works. He was using his hand and doing it with ease.

When I removed mine, something seem to move out of place and I could not move it easily. I took it apart and it seems so easy to put together, but I must be doing something wrong because when it is assembled and rod is pushed in it is tight and hard to move. I thought it might be difficult while not connected to motor because it is spring loaded on the clutch. I had a Johnson 9.9 , 1989 and if I remember correctly it was easy to move while lower unit was off. What am I missing.

While it is on the bench, should the lever be easy to move through the gears by hand? If it is, what do you think I am doing wrong when assembling it? It seems there is only one way to put together and you cant really make a mistake. I have the manual book, but it does not say much about reassembly dos and donts.

Thanks, Mike
