Shift Rod height

Just bought an older boat. Has a Johnson 150. Model J150STLCRD. Is grinding before going into gear forward and reverse. I have removed the lower unit. Marked shift Rod height. I'm not sure if it was set to the right height. I have removed the carrier bearing housing and found the reverse thrust washer and bearing just sitting there. Appears who ever worked on this last didn't know exactly what they were doing. How can I find the correct shift Rod height? I must say marineengine.com and the parts diagrams are a great help. Also Danger marine on YouTube has been a great help.

Thank you for any assistance you can.

1984 - V/6 Crossflow models = (L) 22-1/16" - - (XL) 27-1/16" plus/minus 1/32". Have shift rod in neutral.

Measurement is to be made from the top surface of the lower unit to the center of the shift rod hole.

Top angle of shift rod to face forward,

Thank you. I'll have to measure it again , I had very close to 22" to center.
