"I am no expert here, but item 40 is the e-ring/keeper that was supposed to be on item 39 the shift shaft to prevent you from pulling that out. My best guess is if you cant line the shaft up to re-ingauge the cam below then someone will have to remove the gears and install it correctly. Best I can do, sorry"

"You need to disassemble the lower unit to get it fixed right. The shift cam and E-clip are probably in the bottom of the housing waiting to get eaten by the gears (do not run it anymore major damage could occur). It's a pretty good job especially if you have no experience tearing one down. Not only that, you have to have special tools to do the job also. With the age of the unit you could also have some corrosion issues that make the job even harder. I'm not trying to scare you, just being honest!! Be willing to take a look-see at it if you can get it to me (San Antonio)"

"If you can get the bushing that the shift rod goes through out, you might get it back together. There is not very much room. for the cam to move around. You will probably be able to see it if you get the bushing out. If you can reach down there with a long screwdriver or similar tool you can position the cam so that the shift rod can be inserted. Not easy at all, but not impossible."
