Shift Rod exchange

I have a 1978 Evinrude 35 long shaft. The lower unit is seized. I have located one but it's from a short shaft motor. I know I can exchange the drive shaft, they just pull out but I was wondering about the shift shaft. Does it simply unscrew and come out? If that's the case, do I need to count the turns to make sure the length is correct?

I'm a dummy. I got this boat last fall. It hadn't been used for 7 years and in my excitement from getting it for the price I paid and as quickly as my son and I got it running, I completely forgot to check the lower unit gear oil level. Took it out and got about 300 yds out from the boat ramp it slowed down and killed the motor. That was an expensive mistake, one that will never be made again. My wife was filled with joy (not) when I told her. Thanks for the information.
