I am working on a 1983 E-Rude

I am working on a 1983 E-Rude 50hp LONG SHAFT.WHAT IS THE PROPER PROCEEDURE IN ADJUSTING THE SHIFT ROD AND IN WHAT GEAR DO YOU HAVE IT IN WHEN ADJUSTING ????

The lower unit is removed fro

The lower unit is removed from the motor. I replaced the seals and had to remove the shift rod. So I need the proceedure for adjusting the rod..
 
Measure from the top of the g

Measure from the top of the gear housing to the hole in the shift rod. The measurement should be 20 29/32 + or - 1/32. This is measured with the gearcase in neutral with the offset to the rear.
