Four winns i/o 5.0 omc with volvo penta out drive.Shifting to forward, noticed when I put it in to forward does not seem to kick in to gear unless I push throttle past the foward gear... if that makes sense... Also noticed some clear fluid toward in back of the engine near the battery. Any ideas???

1995. I figured I would try here because the Volvo just replaced an OMC about a year ago. I recently had a marine shop change prop shaft seal and gear oil cause there was water. They did a compression test and all was fine.

Has this problem just started since they changed the gear lube? This would be a cone clutch model so is it possible they didn't put enough lube in????

this clear fluid did you touch it and smell it ? If it was gear oil you would know it from the smell believe me.

With what limited info we have from you i would say you have the lower shift cable that needs adjustment, and or replacement.

If you post a pic of the drive mabe this volvo is a omc / volvo joint venture drive if yes i can post a link that may help you.

It did not seem like gear oil... cause it was clear and did not have any scent... maybe just some gunk that collected over time. The volvo penta outdrive replaced an omc cobra that came with the boat orginally. Not 100% sure but I think its an SX. Boat is in the water now so I will have to check later.

sx is sx cobra or volvo

U asked about the gear lube, look at the top gear lube plug remove it and stick a bent wire in does it come back wet, it's good dry you my have a problem low lube.

I found this near my battery compartment... might be unrelated. Any ideas on what it could be?

No idea what that part is that you found, still say that 95 is going to be cone clutch not dog but you still need to check the lube level even if that means pulling the boat out.

No one here is going to tell you it's ok to run it temporarily...think about it.

Thanks will take a look... This forum is has been really helpful especially to a newbe like me with a not very reliable boat. I am hoping with a few more fixes I will be in good shape for a while. Thanks very much for the help thus far.

I beleive it is the clone clutch as well. Wondering if anyone knows if there is any info out there on the adjustment of the cone clutch?
