"I have a 1975 115 Mercury, I have replaced the lower unit once and never had to pleasure to use it before it shelled the driveshaft, to many dollars later, the lower unit is in place. now the problem is that I cannot get it to shift into forward gear, neutral and reverse is fine, have tried numerous times to adjust the cable. the lower unit was installed with the shift and lower unit in neutral. the control box and cables seem to be in good shape. when the upper shift rod is disconnected from all cable the shift bracket is under the carburetor before forward is totally engaged. I have been told that this particular engine is extremely diffcult to adjust, would appreciate any and all help and suggestions"

"Steve, That motor is the sam

"Steve, That motor is the same as all of the 4/6 cylinder inline merc's of the 70s and 80s. It is no harder to adjust. It sounds like either you have a mis-rebuilt or bad LU or it was not installed properly. When the LU is installed you can "click" it into neutral and it will stay there. Since there are two neutrals, make sure it is in the correct one, or your shifting will be backward. Now set the MercControl into neutral, make sure the shift bushing (on the shift shaft in the midsection of the motor) is inplace. If the shift rod won't align, you will need to move the shift slide (disconnect the shift cable) to make it mate."
