Shift problem 25 hp mariner

i have 1992 25hp mariner.i rep

i have 1992 25hp mariner.i replaced all 3 seals in lower unit.having trouble lining gears up. only have reverse.is there some trick.

Drop

Drop lower unit, select neutral on box, prop should spin freely, select neutral on throttle and put together.

Best to remove gear select cable from motor linkage when doing this, then you'll be certain of alignment.
