shift interrupter

guys,in the process of troubleshooting my electrical system i found that my motor ran a little smoother,and shifted in & out of gear with all wires off of the shift switch.can not figure this.i thought at first the switch could be,and maybe is shorting out.i realize that it should be wired up but could i leave it as is,or could it lead to a problem.advice needed,thanks.

For Mercruiser:
Most likelly your shifing it out of the water with no torque load on the prop. In the water I doubt you will be able to come out of gear without the switch working.

Agreed. When you put it in the water you will try to pull it from drive and end up in reverse. The next thing you will know is you need a new lower unit.

Dock, where in NJ and would you have a V-6 block or a runner

Down at the Jersey shore in Bayville. I have a block I just pulled this week. Intake went bad. Looks like the heads were replaced.

The micro switch button coming fully out ?

You have the screws too tight holding it ?

You can also shoot the button with some lubricate. Sometimes the button sticks.
