100% it gets a bad wrap but very few issues in my experience.Merc has been using this design probably 50 years...I would call that IMPRESSIVE ENGINEERING!
you didn't hurt anyone's feelings. the alpha is great for what it is simple, light, and inexpensive to maintain. Perfect match for a 135 hp set up. Yes it seems like you are unwinding some BS the previous owner did. One issue a lot of folks get cheapo aftermarket impellers, shift cables, bellows. The OEM merc stuff on my boat lasted 18 years (shift cable is still original). Get yourself the factory manuals for drive and engine they are excellent. If you have basic mechanical ability plus the manual you will have no issue.I was in a bad mood after struggling with this project. I know there must be 10 million mercs out there and have been around forever. The comparison to my last boat with volvo penta diesel is stark. While admittedly not a direct comparison, it was far less finicky on adjustments, outdrive maintenance vastly less complicated and raw water cooling circuit system much more applicable to salt water application. It was a much more expensive setup needless to say. I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings and in hindsight I should have kept my findings and thoughts to myself. I also should have expected to get flamed......cheers
