Shift Cutout Switch Problem 1987 350

[FONT=&quot]1987 Mercruiser 350 Magnum The shift cutout switch that momentarily shuts off the engine while shifting forward or reverse now goes on killing the motor anytime it is put in reverse. Tried adjusting but no luck. The trigger goes full on and stays there ONLY when the engine is running and only in reverse. Works fine when engine is off. . Is there a problem in the trans?[/FONT]

Short shift cable is bad or shift linkage in bell housing is sticking and/or hard to move causing resistance in cable.......
