Shift cam keeps chipping

Hey guys I'm new to the forum. This spring I bought a 1996 bass boat with a 1996 90hp Mercury l outboard. Motor runs great. About a month a go I had an issue with reverse gear. When I shifted into reverse I would get a clicking sound which was the dogs not fully engaging. I tore the lower unit apart installed a new impeller and seal kit. I also changed out the shift cam. The upper portion of the shift cam had some chips. Two weeks later the clocking came back. Tore it back apart and again the cam was chipped. Replaced the cam again. Two days later same issue. Can anyone tell me what's going on. I also replaced the follower assembly twice. I brought the gears and dog in and I was told they look good. I'm stumped

Either you're gently shifting it--which is dead wrong!--or your shifter isn't moving all the way, or you're shifting at too high a speed.
