Shift Cable Replacement

I have a 2002 Tiara 31 open with Crusader 8.1's and Hurth Transmissions. Last year I had a "Running hot" situation on the starboard engine. The shift cable was resting on the elbow and started to melt. Now the shifting is stiff and I want to replace that melted shift cable. Is there anything special I need to know to do this?

Not really...just make sure you clean and lube the pivots while it is apart and make sure all the anchors (clips or clamps) are reinstalled securely. The length is finetuned with the end fittings use the morse style cables.

Of notes from the past: the existing cable likely has its length printed on the jacket. as long as it is routed ok, you can use the same cable length as what's there - in your case another foot or two may be of benefit. finally, if you have dual stations and they are connected serially, you may want to consider a parallel cable installation.

I just did a search for pictures of a 2002 Tiarra 31 "open". These are a single station boat..... correct?
If so, you would have what would be considered "home run" cables.... meaning that the cables run directly from the engine/transmission to the throttle/shift unit, and with no second station throttle/shift unit to be concerned with.

Most likely you have the Morse 33C style cables.
As for the length, Mark is correct in that these are usually embossed with the cable information.
However, I have also seen where the original cable length could be either shortened or lengthened for a better fit.
Your call on that!

As for installing the new shift cable, I have often used the old cable to pull in the new cable, using it like a "pull string" so to speak.
It can be somewhat tricky to temporarily connect the two together, but it can be done by using a good heavy duty tape product.

Thanks Rick. You are correct. Single station. And the run is pretty easy. It is all accessible in the engine room and only goes up through the floor where it goes behind the helm. I have not looked at the back of the Binnacle, are there any tricks to making the connections to the transmission or the Binnacle?
