"Well, in a prevoius post, i was having problems adjusting my shift cable on a 1980 470. Turns out the shift arm, and shift cable slide were binding up. With outdrive off, i manually pushed and pulled shift cable slide. would pull out no problem, but when i pushed it back in, it would get jammed up. Looking at the shift arm(new) it seemed to be alittle off, so i took it off to try and tweak it and SNAP. Taiwan junk. Broke down and bought genuine merc. parts. Will let you know how it works out."

Ed you should have known bette

Ed you should have known better than to buy taiwan stuff. i hope it was lesson learned. N_FT_ KILLED our Industry!!!!!!

"Well i put on the new(mercruiser) shift arm last night, and it's still doing the same thing. I can pull it out no problem, but when i push it back in, it binds up with about an inch of travel to go. For some reason, the shift cable slide is being pushed down when i push it back in. I took a small prybar and pushed up on the slide, as i was pushing it back. Then it went all the way back. I made sure the shift cable was threaded all the way into the bellhousing, which it was. Not sure what else to check. I've done a few of these before with no problems. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that it is an old 1980 gimbal assembly, and i'm using a newer style shift cable. Any ideas?"

If you are refering to the CAB

If you are refering to the CABLE end that the cable feeds through with the set screw in it????

Then there is probably an excess biuld up of grease or gunk in the back side of the cable end. I have seen this before and it litteraly stopped the cable end from moving all the way towards the housing.

"Kghost,
On the aft end of the shift cable, there is a brass threaded nut that screws into the bellhousing. I believe this is the part you said to make sure was threaded all the way in. Which it is. Well on that nut, there is a little nipple or brass tube that sticks out. That part is binding on the shift cable slide(part you mentioned with set screw) Like i said, i can push the cable all the way in, when the shift arm is not engaged in the slide. The piece you are referring to, i was thinking of maybe cutting about a half inch off. That would fix the problem. Any thoughts?"

We got a arm that slides on the drive end once that the opening of the hole wasn't countersunk and when moving to the reverse position wouldn't slide on easily.

not sure what your thinking about cutting but I would stronly advise against cutting anything.

"Brian, sounds like the part i'm talking about. What did you do to fix the problem? Try a new one? Ream out hole bigger? This is driving me crazy."

Ok Now I understand.

The SH

Ok Now I understand.

The SHIFT arm with the little wheel on it is your issue. It is very difficult sometimes to remove the setscrew from the shift arm with the WHEEL. It is a slotted screw driver set screw and it goes all the way thru the shift arm. It is stainless steel.

What is going on is the vertical shaft attached to the shift arm. it is binding. Seen it a million times.

Get a camera and take a pic and post.

If you can remove the set screw and then remove the shift arm you can then remove the vertical shaft and find out why it is binding.

You may need a impact screw removal tool to get the screw started. Sometimes they come out ok but most times they are a bit_ch. I have had to drill out many!! the threads by the way are 10-32 if you need to chase them.

Let me know if that is what you are refering to????

"Kghost,
Let me back

"Kghost,
Let me back up a minute, and tell you what parts i replaced. The shift arm with the wheel is new. The vertical shaft is new. New bushing kit for the vertical shaft. New shift cable(newer style) New shift cable slide(piece on aft end of shift cable) Everything moves freely, until the shift arm with the wheel, and the shift cable slide are joined together. I'm wondering if when the person who taped out hole for newer shift cable, might have tapped hole on an angle."

AGAIN TAKE SOME PICS AND POST

AGAIN TAKE SOME PICS AND POST

Also very important to relay ALL the details clearly so we understand what has and has NOT been done.
