Shift adjustment 1990 force 120

I have a hard time shifting into reverse. I hit a spot where I have to force it a little bit.

Do I adjust the shift rod under the carbs? The rod needs to rise about 1/4 inch or so. Do I tighten the double nuts... or loosen them?

@Jerryjerry05 I found what you wrote in an older thread.

"there's a double nut on the top of the intermediate shift shaft, under the bottom carb,
sometimes you'll need to adjust here but only as a last resort."

Is there something else that I should try?. It's very hard to get to those nuts

Many control boxes are damaged with kids imitating grandpa at the controls.------Most folks are not aware of how the clutch dog engages with the gears.

Yes this issue was with the motor running. The shift rod lever under the bottom carb is hitting the tower linkage and not allowing it to go all the way full throttle in reverse. I have to force it a little but. I was reading the manual and it says that the shift rod lever and tower linkage should be level while in neutral? We'll its not level. The shift rod lever needs to come up a little bit. There is some adjustment that is off

@Jerryjerry05 i took the boat out today.. she started and idled great. But she gets stuck in reverse. It seems to be an issue with the lower shift rod. It's gets stuck in the up position (which is reverse) and won't go back down on its own like it should. What would cause this and how to fix? I looked like a fool going in reverse by the boat ramp lol. I did finally get it to go into forward and she ran like a champ. I was very happy after all the work that's been put into it. Just need to get this shifting issue fixed and I'm back in business.

The upper shift rod moves up and down like it should but the lower is not moving with it like it should. It sticks.

The shift rod where it enters the lower unit gets dirty/corroded and can seize.
It has a seal that squeezes the rod and needs to be replaced and the aluminum boss needs cleaning and a new seal.

I put a wire on to connect the shift rods and I wrapped it above and below the coupler so that the shift rods have no choice but to move in unison. Works great.
