" Have a 79 Johnson 115 She sat for 8 years till I redone the boat.New seats,carpet..... Cleaned carbs real good New plugs Good Compression New Battery Changed lower unit grease Everything looks great Problem is the motor turns Quick with the plugs out but with them in she sounds real sluggish. I put a good starter on and I get the same thing. I've got fire and gas but she don't run "

" Chad, are you sure she has a good battery. If the battery is weak she may rob most power for starter and not has hot enuf spark. Also make sure exhaust ports are clean, no mouse nests, etc.Is she got fresh fuel??? If you take a squirt oil can and put mixed fuel in her, a shot or two in the cylinders, will tell you whether she is firing. If she tries to start on that method but wont stay running, sounds like fuel problem. Good luck, post results and ask ?s if need be. Kim "

"Chad.... Even with a good starter and battery, there is a possibility that you have a dirty or loose cable connection somewhere. After attempting to crank the engine with the s/plugs in, feel the cables at the battery end and also at the engine. A hot or overly warm cable is a telltale of the above problem. Even though a cable is tight, if the connection is slightly corroded or dirty, there will be a voltage drop.

Rig up a spark tester. With the key in the ON position and the spark plugs removed, when cranking the engine, there whould be a strong blue flame (spark) at all four (4) s/plug terminals that will jump a 7/16" gap. YOu can insert a medium size philips screwdriver tip into the s/plug boots and hold the shank of the screwdriver a 7/16" away from block if you wish.

The ignition on that engine is self contained, deriving its initial power to the powerpack from the Stator/Charge Coil that's located under the flywheel. The Stator is energized by the flywheel magnets spinning around it. The engine must be turning at least 300 rpm in order to generate that initial power. A slow hesitant cranking speed is very unlikely to develop ignition. Let us know what you find.

Joereeves is right on. You wouldn't believe the problem caused by loose/dirty or corroded cables.
Make sure those cables are heavy enough to bear
the load placed on them.
