Severe Rattle & Death! 2004 3.0

Put my 2004 Four Winns 3.0 GL/SX in the water labor day. It had sat for 3 weeks and took about 5 tries to start then fine. warmed up & ran WOT for about a half mile & heard a rattle in the engine compartment. pulled the cushion and opened the engine door and the rattle/knock was horrendous! shut it down and waited a few minutes. Tried to start again and just got wiiiiiizzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I am a complete novice when it comes to this but it really sounded expensive! Any ideas what I'm lookin at here.

Thanks:(

Re: Severe Rattle & Death!

Very very difficult to diagnose with the limited information that we have here... and that is not faulting your post!
It is hard to describe some scenarios. This is going to require some exploration and elimination.

BTW..... and a friendly FYI....... WOT is an rpm to use when testing for correct over-all gear ratio and propeller pitch, (given that all else is good).
It is NOT an RPM to be sustained, unless you are willing to shorten the life of your engine.

Re: Severe Rattle & Death!

Is it possible the starter was stuck engaged? Or did it sound like "catastrophic failure"?

Re: Severe Rattle & Death!

I would describe it as "catastrophic failure". The best way to describe the sound it was making before I shut it down is pots and pans crashing around.

Re: Severe Rattle & Death!

Others are telling me it could be a rod or piston ring. Sound right? Also, I'm told that, generally speaking, an auto mechanic can work on this and I don't have to take to a marine engine shop. Is that true?

Re: Severe Rattle & Death!

Hi, When you try to start the engine, does the crankshaft turn? If not, you may have a drive plate - starter related problem.

Re: Severe Rattle & Death!

My guess is that you really didn't get it very warm before going to WOT. I never go to WOT until the engine temp gauge is up to its normal operating temp.

Re: Severe Rattle & Death!

This is a real looooooong shot here..... but have you checked to see if all of your pots and pans are still in the galley?

Re: Severe Rattle & Death!

Well, five days have passed since your first post and I feel there has been no progress. I suggest that by posting here and doing nothing you are not going to find what the problem is, let alone resolve it. I would start by looking for the obvious. For example: do you have water in the oil?; does the oil have metal particles? Can you turn the engine by hand (that is, moving the crankshaft pulley)? Is the flywheel still attached to the crankshaft or have the bolts sheared?
