setting shift splines

I removed the lower unit to replace the water pump on my 120 hp force 1997. I removed it in forward pos. on the bench my kid asked what the spline was for and turned it, how do I get it back to forward. I turned it in both directions, by turning the drive shaft clockwise it is always in forward, no mater where the shift splines are turned. what's up with that? Hope some one can help!!

Try turning the shaft to the left then pull up on the right prop ear as you look from the rear of the drive.
It should turn the shaft.Try turning the shaft the other way and pull up on the ear and if it slips and no shaft turns then it's in reverse(I think)J

Thanks I got it figured out, using pliers I got it into neutral and put it back together. Thanks
